Review: Vampires in Manhattan by Melissa De La Cruz

Synopsis:

The Vampires of Manhattan is "hipster horror"--the memorable characters from her Blue Bloods series are older and cooler than before, trying to build "Millennial" lives in the bustle of Manhattan while battling forces of evil and, of course, each other.

Hero of this sexy, paranormal action tale is Oliver Hazard-Perry, former human conduit, and Manhattan's only human-turned-vampire, now the head of the Blue Bloods Coven. When his all-too-human lover is found murdered on the eve of the coven's annual Four Hundred Ball--a celebration meant to usher in a new era in vampire society, and to mark the re-unification of the Coven after decades of unrest and decay--Oliver is devastated.

Now, not only is he trying to create a new world order for the immortal elite, he's the prime suspect and is stalked by the newly installed head of the vampire secret police. Because according to the new rules, vampires who take human life can now be executed. Burned.

How can an immortal sentenced to die fight back? He has to find the killer--and the answers lie deep in vampire lore

My Review:

Reading Slumps blow! Getting books for review is fun and exhilarating, but sometimes you end up reading not so great books that get you in a slump. That was what happened to me in August. I read only 4 books in August and only 1 of them was above a 3 star or above. Combine that to my new job where I work about 50-60 hours a week - leads to a very unmotivated reading nurse. So I decided to do something different. I swayed away from Review TBR and read a couple of books that I wanted to read. I ended up picking up Vampires of Manhtattan which in a way was not cheating, because I did win a review copy from Goodreads, but it was also picking up a book by a favorite author which always helps me get out of my slumps. And it was exactly the right move.

To be fair, let me start of saying that I was pretty disappointed with the way the Blue Bloods ended. Gates of Paradise was not at all my favorite book in the series. But the last few books I have read by Melissa (Witches of East End and Rose and Crown) have completely reignited my love affair with Melissa De La Cruz's work. I was denied on Edelweiss for a review copy of this book, but was surprised to have been chosen as a winner on the Goodreads giveaway (As I never win those things).

Jumping right into this book you introduced to some new major characters and reunited to some old favorites. Immediately I was flown away by the change in Oliver. As this book picks off 10 years after where Gates of Paradise ended. Oliver was always the smart, dependable side kick. But in this book he is now a confident powerful sex God. So much so that it made me go WOAH! Mimi on the other hand is a matured and more subdued. There is trouble in the Mimi and Kingsley world and to see how she deal with is a side of Mimi Force/Martin that we have not seen.

It wouldn't be the Blue Blood world is there wasn't a killer on the loose and let me just say you will be shocked to find out who it is. (Spoiler - It is one of our old characters). To me there was one thing missing in this book and I thought I was going to end the book having enjoyed it but missing a couple of my favorite characters but then the Epilogue happened. And lets just say I am super excited for the 2nd book in the series! It ends on a small cliffhanger, but no one that makes you bash you head against the wall since it is probably another year until book 2. Vampires of Manhattan is definitely in my top 5 of 2014 so far!

  2. WOw, this is very good news! I heard so,e mixed reviews, but none of them were lovers of de la Cruz as I am. Granted, I haven't finished the Blue Bloods series yet, I'm on book four..which I'm starting next week. But I have read and loved the witches of east end series (fingers crossed she continues that!) anyway. I really wanna read this! I'm thinking I should probably wait tho until I finish blue Bloods, yeah?

    1. Honestly - I would wait until you finish the series. As there are some characters you haven't met yet and some unexpected love matches :)
