Synopsis:

Orion is a Subpar, expected to mine the tunnels of Outpost Five, near the deadly flash curtain. For generations, her people have chased cirium—the only element that can shield humanity from the curtain’s radioactive particles. She and her caving partner, Dram work the most treacherous tunnel, fighting past flash bats and tunnel gulls, in hopes of mining enough cirium to earn their way into the protected city.

But when newcomers arrive at Outpost Five, Orion uncovers disturbing revelations that make her question everything she thought she knew about life on both sides of the cirium shield. As conditions at the outpost grow increasingly dangerous, it’s up to Orion to forge a way past the flashfall, beyond all boundaries, beyond the world as she knows it.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Hello Jenny! We are super excited to have you in our FFBC tours.

Could you tell our Book Addicts a little bit about Flashfall?

FLASHFALL is about a teenage girl named Orion who is fighting to get herself and the people she loves out of a dangerous mining outpost, and into a city that is shielded from the deadly particles of the flashfall. She and her people are Subpars, able to endure exposure to the particles better than others, and so it falls to them to mine the dangerous tunnels near the flash curtain, in order to find the precious ore used to protect humanity. If they mine 400 grams of cirium ore, they can earn a place in the protected city. But just as Orion and her caving partner, Dram, are about to reach this goal, they discover the Subars have been betrayed, and that the only way to true freedom and safety is a path they’ll have to forge themselves.

Can you tell us a little bit more about Orion and Dram and their personalities?

Orion and Dram grew up together at Outpost Five as Subpars, miners who descend terrifying tunnels in search of an ore called cirium. They’ve been caving partners for years. Orion is the “Lead Ore Scout” of the outpost because she is the best at finding cirium, and Dram works as a “Marker”, marking their routes. They work tunnel nine, the deepest and most dangerous of the tunnels, and they’ve saved each other’s lives countless times. They’ve forged an incredibly close bond as caving partners, and the love that grows between them is powerful.

How did you come up with the story? Did you find inspiration in any other story/movie/show and how has this affected your writing?

The idea for FLASHFALL began with my main character, Orion. I wanted to write about a girl who got knocked down again and again, but kept getting back up—kept dreaming there was a better life beyond her circumstances. I had just gotten several rejections from agents on my second novel, and felt overwhelmed with discouragement. My publishing dream seemed beyond reach. I began writing FLASHFALL from that place.

I crafted the setting of tunnels and caverns from my own fears (I’m extremely claustrophobic), and the cordons were inspired by my experiences growing up in the Arizona desert.

Tell us your favorite quote from Flashfall.
My favorite quote is the last line of the book. Since that’s spoiler-y, I’ll share one of my other faves:

“My mother once told me I have magic. She didn’t speak the words, nothing as dangerous as that. The day she guided me down my first tunnel, she simply pressed my hand to the cavern wall, and I knew.
I have magiv in a place where it is outlawed.”

Is there a specific scene that you had the most fun to write?

Honestly, I love writing kissing scenes. Dram and Orion go through so many terrible experiences, and it’s important to give them moments of hope and joy. There is something so powerful and beautiful about finding light in dark moments. One of my favorite scenes in FLASHFALL is when they find sanctuary in the midst of their most dire circumstances.

If you had to pick one song to be the Theme Song for Flashfall – Which one would you pick?

Rise by Katy Perry

Imagine that we get to see your book on the big screen (how awesome would that be?). Who would you pick to play your characters? (It can be anyone – famous or not)

Ah, this would really be a dream come true! I’m not sure who I’d love for the movie cast. It’s pretty great when they cast actors no one has seen before.

The first time I saw Anna and Koy (the actors who play Orion and Dram in the book trailer) in costume, I teared up. It was surreal to see my characters come to life like that. Especially when we started filming in the caves, and they were in character—saying lines pulled from my imagination.

Is there any recommendations you could give your readers to be in the “perfect mood” to read Flashfall (specific music, snacks…)?

Ooh, FLASHFALL is all about moody atmosphere. I love candles, or string lights, or being outside when I read it. The setting is really immersive in this book.

I considered a lot of details when creating the world of FLASHFALl. If you’re interested in seeing images and quotes that inspired me, you can check out my Pinterest boards:

Music is a huge part of what inspires me! These are a few of the songs I listened to on repeat while writing FLASHFALL:

FLASHFALL Playlist:
Torpedo/Jillette Johnson
Rise/Katy Perry
What You Wanted/One Republic
Au Revoir/One Republic
Empire/Ella Henderson
I’ll Keep You Safe/Sleeping At Last
My Blood/Ellie Goulding
Don’t Look Down/One Republic
Breathe Me/Sia
Just Like Fire/Pink
Through the Dark/One Direction
True North/Jillette Johnson
Lay It All On Me/Ed Sheeran/Rudimental
If I Lose Myself/One Republic
The Feeling/Justin Bieber/Halsey
I Won’t Let You Go/Switchfoot

Snacks: Ooh! I love snacks when I read. Personally, I go for something salty and sweet, like chocolate covered pretzels. Or trail mix, because it’s basically M&Ms disguised as “healthy.” I drank gallons of coffee all the times I read through and revised FLASHFALL. That may be one of the reasons it’s so fast-paced, lol!

What’s next for you?

Currently, I’m hard at work on the sequel to FLASHFALL. The design team is putting together cover ideas, and my editor and I have just settled on a title. We are working through revisions, and I’m swept up in the new adventures unfolding for Orion and Dram. Some very exciting things happen in Book Two!

Thank you so much for everything, Jenny!

Synopsis:

For once, Maggie McKendrick just wants to control her own life. Her overbearing Hollywood director father has it all planned out for her: UCLA, law school, then working as an entertainment lawyer, preferably for him. But Maggie has other, more creative-spirit friendly, plans. Namely, Thrippletons School of Fashion and Design in England, and then onto becoming a designer, preferably a wildly successful one. The big snag in her plan? Getting it past her dad.

A movie shoot takes the family to the Scottish Highlands for the summer, and closer to Maggie’s dream school. While there, she runs into the charming Preston Browne. Maggie is intrigued and decides to bend her no guys rule—instituted after her ex used her to get close to her dad. Forced to keep secrets from Preston in order to protect the future plans she’s made, Maggie finds herself falling for the tall Brit. And for once in her life she knows that he’s interested in her, not her Hollywood connections. When Maggie's father blackmails her into dating his lead actor, she isn’t left with a choice. The biggest problem isn’t having to date hunky, mega-hottie, Ben Chambers. No, it’s praying she doesn’t lose Preston in the process.

Excelling at her dream school, Maggie’s personal life is a tangled mess. She needs to decide if living a lie is worth losing Preston or chance going against her father and facing his wrath. When the tabloids expose the truth of her fake relationship with Ben, Maggie's world is thrown into a tailspin. Ultimately, Maggie must find the courage to take risks and forge ahead on her own path.
