Synopsis:

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl.

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

It was important to me that I didn't stray so far from the original tales that they were no longer recognizable. At the same time, I wanted to make sure the stories were unique and interesting enough to stand on their own. I wanted readers to go through periods where they forget that they're reading a fairy tale retelling at all, that they were just caught up in the characters and the world, but then have little flashes of - "Oh, yeah, this is Cinderella! There's the pumpkin carriage!" etc. Fairy tales make for an excellent skeleton to build off of.

I wouldn't want to be any of them permanently, because, let's face it, they go through a lot of really horrible stuff! But I think Scarlet had a pretty good life prior to the start of the book. It was a peaceful existence on the farm... until all the bad stuff started happening.

I love to cosplay, but it feels too self-serving to cosplay one of my own characters (so my costume for last year was steampunk Little Red, not necessarily Scarlet). This year my mom and I talked about making a Queen of Hearts costume to start promoting one of my upcoming novels, HEARTLESS, but I'm afraid that we're running out of time and I don't think it's going to happen. Maybe I'll dig out one of my old costumes from the bin instead...

I would LOVE to see the books made into movies! *also crossing fingers!* I don't have my heart set on any actors or actresses, but I've seen fancastings that I thought were pretty spot-on. Some of my favs include Shay Mitchell as Cinder, Emma Stone as Scarlet, and Evanna Lynch as Cress.

I am super excited for Winter to come out, so that readers can finally see the resolution that's been playing out in my head for six years! I can tell you that it will be the most action-packed book of the series, and also include a whole lot of kissing. (Swoon!) Winter is based on Snow White - where Princess Winter is Queen Levana's stepdaughter. It's largely set on Luna, so readers will get to see a lot more of the social structure of the Lunars... and I hope it will be full of many unexpected twists and turns!

I live in Tacoma, Washington, with my fiancé and our two cats. In addition to my slight obsession with books and writing, I'm big on road-tripping, wine-tasting, and hunting for antiques. I'm represented by Jill Grinberg.

CINDER, my debut novel, is a futuristic re-envisioning of Cinderella in which Cinder is a cyborg mechanic. Release date: 3 Jan 2012.
