For those who have not the books yet, can you tell
us a little about Landry Park?
Landry
Park is a book that is kind of future historical or
Regency dystopian, set two hundred years in the future, where the world looks a
lot like the past. Madeline Landry is
poised to inherit one of the most influential estates in her city when a Gentry
girl is attacked outside of a ball.
Everyone around Madeline blames the Rootless, the caste of people
responsible for cleaning after the nuclear fuel that powers the lavish lives of
the Gentry, but Madeline is determined to uncover the truth of what actually
happened…
If you could describe Madeline in 5 words, what
would they be?
Thoughtful, stubborn, quiet, loyal and intelligent
Is there a specific scene that you had the most fun
to write?
One of the reasons I started writing the Landry Park series was that I loved
dresses and balls and luxurious settings, and so the climatic scene at the end
of Jubilee Manor with the big dress
and all the set-pieces was a ton of fun to write, and was one of the few scenes
that hardly changed at all from first draft to final edits.
Without giving spoilers away, what was challenging
about writing the sequel Jubilee Manor?
It was challenging to make sure that I wrapped up
long-term questions from the first book while also keeping the tight pace of
the murder mystery that kicks off the second book—I keep expecting to wake up
one morning and be like, “Oh no I forgot to answer something!”
And as a huge fan of Jane Austen, I couldn't help
notice some of the Pride and Prejudice references in Landry Park. The mention of 24 families attending, and
David Dana’s entry almost felt reminiscent of Mr. Bingley’s arrival. Was this
intentionally done or am I reading too much into it haha.
I’m so glad you felt that way! That was definitely on purpose, because I
adore Pride and Prejudice and it was
such a huge inspiration to my work, and so I wanted to pay homage in some
way. Eeps! I am so happy you noticed!
