Goodreads Synopsis:

YOU CAN BE A VII. IF YOU GIVE UP EVERYTHING.

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked—surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed …and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose—and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

My Review:

I had been approved for this book a while ago, but for one reason or another it kept getting pushed back on my TBR. But I was looking for something new and fresh to read that was no contemporary and I decided to pick this up. The only thing I am upset about is that I waited so long to read this. But then again, if i had read it earliar, I would have had to wait a longer time for the sequel.

I was intrigued with the book from the very 1st page. I mean common, how many books starts off with the main character about to follow through with a scheme that would result in her getting shot by the police. I was hooked and through out most of the book I was SURE that this was going to be my first 5 STAR read of the year. But alas I had some issues with the pace in the middle, but the beginning and end of this book with in a class of its own!

The story is about a girl named Kitty who on her 17th birthday has just taken a test that will determine her standing in society. If you score a IV or above then you are considered a valuble member of society. But Kitty with her inability to read scored a III, which qualifies her as a sanitation worker. Determined that this is not the way she wants to spend the rest of her life, she decides to steal a peice of fruti from the town market, which is punishable by death. Just when she's about to steal the orange and  walk away with it, she is found and stopped by her boyfriend. Her boyfriend is destined to score extremely high and do great things with his life.

Knowing that her ranking will keep her bf back from everything she is capable of, she finds away to run away form working in the sewers. She agrees to work as a prostitute at the local strip club. On her first day there they will be auctioning of her virginity to the highest bidder. Her virginity ends up being the best sale the club has ever seen. As she sits in her room anxiously waiting to see who has purchased her, in enters the person she would ever expect the Prime Minister and he has a proposition for her. His niece, the most beloved girl in the country has died and he wants Kitty who has very similar eyes to take over Lila's life and live as her as a VII the highest ranking in the country.

I honestly was blown away by this story. It was action packed with story lines that kept you guessing with each page. Just when you think you have  figured out who Kitty can trust at court, something happens that makes you second guess who is actually Kitty's friend and who is using her for their own alternative motives. The middle of story lagged somewhat. It was all necessary for character development and story building, but if it had kept the same speed as the rest of the book then it would definitely have earned 5 stars from me. And almost toward the end OMG there is a huge twist that I DID NOT SEE COMING and the end was absolutely amazing. It does not end on a cliff hanger, but with a decision that will leave you anxious for book 2!
